Louis XVI-Style Giltwood Console Table
Louis XVI-Style Table
Circa 1870
A fine Louis XVI-style console table with a beautiful giltwood base and rouge marble top. The table’s four fully carved legs, resembling architectural columns, are typical of the Neoclassical taste, and are accented by a raised mask cartouche in the center.
Based on the furniture and decor created during the reign of French King Louis XVI (1774-1789), the Louis XVI style experienced a revival in the 1860s in Europe and the eastern part of the United States. This revival reintroduced a formal classicism to furniture with an emphasis on simplicity, straight lines and symmetry. Slenderness of proportion was once again favored in furniture, as well as delicate classical motifs and understated luxury. Today, this elegant and timeless style remains highly prized.
