Regency Rosewood Card Tables

Regency Rosewood Card Tables

These exceptional late Regency card tables were designed with both elegance and functionality in mind. Crafted of rosewood after a model by Henry Holland, the calamander-banded and gilt tables serve as a well-appointed side table with a "D" shaped top when not in use. When one is ready for a card game, the tables quickly transform into a sturdy playing surface by simply unfolding the hinged top. The tabletops rest on impressive triform bases that boast a rare architectural form, complete with lappet-turned columns and three gilded paw feet. Exhibiting the best of traditional Regency design, these tables are a triumph of early 19th-century inventiveness.

Card playing and gambling were very popular pastimes among the fashionable elite during the 18th- and 19th centuries, and tables such as these were specially crafted and housed in some of the finest estates throughout Great Britain. It is exceedingly rare to find a matching Regency-period pair such as these, particularly in such excellent condition.
