Tiffany & Co. Exhibition Clock Garniture

Tiffany & Co. Exhibition Clock Garniture

1900 Paris Exposition Clock Garniture
Tiffany & Co. and Colin & Cie
Dated 1900

The finest decorative objects were those crafted for international exhibitions, which provided design firms with the opportunity to showcase their most ambitious work on the world stage. Created for the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, this highly rare, monumental gilt bronze clock garniture reflects Tiffany & Co. at the height of its international influence.

By the turn of the century, the firm had become synonymous with refined luxury, and its presentation in Paris helped cement its international standing, culminating in Louis Comfort Tiffany’s receipt of the Legion of Honor. Framed by two naturalistic multi-arm candelabra, the palatial-scale clock is richly adorned with exuberant Rococo scrollwork and mythological aquatic motifs, its composition centered by a spirited Bacchic cherub. The result is a theatrical fusion of grandeur and imagination, uniting sculptural dynamism with exceptional decorative refinement.

The bronze case and mounts were cast by Colin & Cie, one of Paris’s most respected fondeurs d’art, celebrated for technical precision and sculptural richness. Frequently entrusted with important exhibition commissions, the foundry brought remarkable depth, movement and refinement to ornamental bronze. This clock is a rare testament to the extraordinary convergence of master craftsmen on the world stage.
