Unheated Brazilian Paraiba Ring, 23.50 carats

Unheated Brazilian Paraiba Ring, 23.50 carats

The scale and rarity of this exceptional 23.50-carat untreated Brazilian Paraiba tourmaline are remarkable by any standard. Fewer than a handful of Brazilian Paraibas exceeding 20 carats are known to remain without heat enhancement, placing this example among the most significant gemstones of its kind. Its vivid Heitorita coloration—named for the miner who first uncovered these extraordinary stones—is intensely saturated, with the unmistakable neon luminosity that defines the finest Paraiba tourmalines.

The origins of Paraiba tourmaline are inseparable from the life of Heitor Dimas Barbosa, who in the early 1980s began excavating the hills behind São José de Batalha in Paraíba, Brazil. Working under austere conditions and guided by intuition rather than precedent, Barbosa’s perseverance culminated in 1987 with the discovery of a tourmaline unlike any previously known. Enriched by trace elements of copper and manganese, Paraiba tourmalines possess a radiant, internal glow that appears to illuminate the stone from within. Commercial production proved fleeting, with the vast majority of Brazilian output occurring between 1989 and 1992, further underscoring the scarcity of important examples today.

Certified by the American Gemological Laboratories as Brazilian origin with no evidence of heat treatment, this tourmaline’s importance is amplified by its size, provenance, and color purity. The square cushion cut gemstone is framed by two F-color, VS-clarity diamonds totaling 2.00 carats, their brilliance providing a refined counterpoint to the tourmaline’s electric hue. Set in platinum.
