This is an outstanding Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Melba center bowl, featuring the incredible Garden of Paradise pattern. Based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the extravagant bowl is awash with color as Art Nouveau-inspired elements like grand buildings and columns, amorphous foliage and trees and frolicking imps and fairies adorn this elegantly shaped bowl, while red, orange and black flames curl around the vesselâs pedestal foot.
Fairyland Lustre, the creation of designer Daisy Makeig-Jones, was a crowning achievement for Wedgwood in the early 20th century. In contrast to Wedgwoodâs history of classic designs and subdued colors, designs like Garden of Paradise are bursting with brilliant colors, alive with scenes of nymphs, elves and fairies romping through enchanted forests and make-believe lands.
Introduced in 1915, Fairyland Lustre wares were well received and the range of works produced during the 1920s was remarkable. Makeig-Jones retired in 1931, ending the reign of Fairyland Lustre. Today, these works are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors. Vibrant and unusual, this amazing vase reflects the superior quality of Wedgwood porcelain matched with the artistic force of Makeig-Jones. An almost identical bowl is featured in Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre by Una des Fontaines.
